A dog I used to have — she died a couple of years ago of old age — once contracted Lyme disease, although we really didn’t know it was until the vet tested her. We live in an area where deer are quite prevalent, with the ticks that cause Lyme. It’s so bad around here that my son had Lyme at age 7 (he’s now 19) after a hike at his nature camp. The counselors checked the kids afterward, but missed one this day — and I like a fool started scrubbing on what I thought was dirt. What I was supposed to do was tweeze the tick straight outward. However, thankfully three weeks of antibiotics cured him.
